New York Law School’s ADR Skills Program invites you to join…
THE WEDNESDAY LUNCH SERIES:
CONVERSATIONS in CONFLICT RESOLUTION
Beginning May 20 and for every two weeks thereafter, New York Law School will offer informal and provocative conversations with interesting leaders in the field of conflict avoidance, management and resolution. All of these offerings take place at 1:00 p.m. New York time, are free of charge, and occur on a Zoom online platform. Here is the first group of talks, including links to videos that you can watch at your convenience:
May 20: Laura Kaster, Chair Elect of the New York State Bar Association Dispute Resolution Section and Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators, discusses the implications of our natural and unconscious affinity for people like us, and how unintended biases in decision making might be addressed.
June 3: India Johnson, President of the American Arbitration Association, offers some vision and some imagination on what conflict resolution practice will look like after this period of forced innovation.
June 17: John Lande, Isador Loeb Professor Emeritus at the University of Missouri School of Law, explains the findings in his most recent co-authored book, Litigation Interest and Risk Assessment, that lawyers chronically underestimate their clients’ risk in litigation, and therefore make chronic errors in settlement negotiation.
July 1: James Tricarico, former General Counsel at Edward Jones, reports on his experience of lawyers’ being poorly trained to represent clients in arbitration. What skills do clients seek in arbitration advocacy, and whose job is it to train attorneys in those skills?
July 15: Dwight Golann, Professor of Law at Suffolk University in Boston, picks up opon themes of his popular book, Sharing a Mediator’s Powers: Effective Advocacy in Settlement, pointing out the common misapprehensions of client representative that frustrate ideal mediation outcomes.
This link lists future Wednesday conversations as well as videos of prior programs.
Take a mid-day break every other Wednesday – grab a sandwich, listen, learn, and pose questions to some of the most interesting minds in our field!
