AALS Program on Difficult Conversations in Polarized Times

From Donna Shestowsky:

On behalf of the AALS Section on ADR, I hope you will join us in DC for the AALS Annual Meeting.  Registration is open.

Here is some information about our section’s program, which will also serve as our section meeting:

In the spirit of the AALS’s recognition of the need for “Defending Democracy,” the Section on ADR has secured the top voices on difficult conversations to discuss the need for constructive dialogue in politics, workplaces, and families.  Harvard Law Professors Sheila Heen, world-renowned for co-authoring Difficult Conversations, and Rachel Viscomi will offer insights into why civil discussions have become increasingly rare in both public and private spaces and provide tools for having a productive conversation on difficult topics.

This very timely program, titled Difficult Conversations in Polarized Times: The Dining Room, Conference Room, or Town Square, should resonate with law faculty and staff experiencing changing cultures and climates within law schools, the legal profession, and the political arena.   It underscores the Section on ADR’s commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue as a cornerstone of a healthy democratic society, and to assist faculty with difficult conversations both in and outside the classroom.

This session will take place on January 4th from 3 to 4PM.  We hope you can join this important conversation.

I’d also like to thank our wonderful annual works-in-progress 2023 co-hosts, Quinnipiac and Yale.  We had an energizing time in New Haven last week, reconnecting with old friends and making many new ones.  Based on the number and level of engagement of first-time attendees, I left feeling sure that our field’s future will be an incredibly bright one.

All my best,

Donna
