Wallace Warfield 1938-2010

Wallace Warfield died about a week ago, and the world of conflict resolution is now far less rich.

Wallace taught at ICAR at George Mason, and he did stints with SPIDR, with ACUS, with Community Relations Service at DOJ,  with Eastern Mennonite University, and with street gang worked in NYC.  He worked in conflict zones in South America and in Africa.  He was almost breathtakingly self-effacing, and yet he contributed enormously to our understanding of conflict resolution–both because of his teaching and because of his exemplary practice.

Many in the legal academy probably did not have the chance to know Wallace, and that’s our loss.  I only came to know him well in the last couple years. And I remember and value each of my conversations with him.

When I observed Wallace speak in ADR circles, many of the best-known leaders of our field stopped and listened.

I wish we all had more time to listen.
