12th Annual ODR Cyberweek – October 26-30

The 12th Annual ODR Cyberweek is coming up next week and, as part of the festivities, the ABA’s Section of Dispute Resolution is sponsoring two activities that sound very interesting.  The announcement, in its entirety, is below.

The Committee on Ethics of the American Bar Association Section on Dispute Resolution is conducting two special activities during the 12th ODR Cyber week http://cyberweek.umasslegal.org/ which will be held from October 26 – 30, 2009. We urge you to encourage, cajole, demand, require (and other appropriate verbs) your students to participate!

The first activity is a hypothetical on line mediation raising ethical issues concerning the mediator’s conduct. The hypothetical will be posted at http://www.abanet.org/dch/committee.cfm?com=DR018000  and is attached to this email for your convenience.  Everyone is invited to submit an analysis of the mediator’s handling of the ethical dilemmas confronted to rwolf@law.umaryland.edu  (600 words or less) citing relevant ethical standards. Please put in the subject line “cyber week ethics analysis.” Two members of the Ethics Committee will read each submission and they will select some of the best responses for publication in the November issue of the Section’s E-News.  All of the submissions will be viewable at the conclusion of Cyberweek on the Cyberweek website.

The second activity is a discussion thread raising ethical issues for online mediators.  The discussion will be started by several leaders in ODR ethics – Susan Exon, Kimberlee Kovach, and Colin Rule – and everyone is invited to participate in the discussion which will continue throughout Cyberweek.

Get your students and yourselves into the fun of Cyberweek and especially participating in these activities.

Susan Exon, Marnie Huff, Tim Hedeen, Kimberlee Kovach, Colin Rule, and Roger Wolf
