The American Caribbean Law Initiative (ACLI) is requesting paper abstracts and panel proposals for its Summer 2009 conference, July 10-12, 2009, Port of Spain, Trinidad Tobago, at the Hilton Trinidad and Conference Centre.  The paper topics and panel proposals may deal with any aspect of dispute resolution and restorative justice, including but not limited to:  mediation, arbitration, intercultural communication, human rights and restorative justice, community conferencing, therapeutic jurisprudence, online dispute resolution, and other peaceful forms of problem-solving.

 

Paper abstracts should contain the author’s name, title, and affiliation, paper title, and an abstract of 100 words or fewer.  Panel proposals should indicate the panel topic, name, title, and affiliation of panel members, and the nature of the panel’s planned discussion or presentation (100 words or fewer).  Registration for the conference is required in order to make a presentation or participate on a panel.  The ACLI’s conference attendees will be a mix of law professors, legal scholars, legal practitioners, and dispute resolution professionals, primarily from the Caribbean and the U.S.  The Mediation Room is also scheduled to demonstrate its online dispute resolution software program (Pro Bono Clinic Platform)
at the conference which is being utilized in the First International Negotiation and Mediation Competition for Law Schools (http://www.dontsue.net) worldwide.  This online competition dealing with client instruction, case pleading, negotiation, and mediation of a commercial dispute incorporates the International Competition for Online Dispute Resolution (ICODR) 2008. More than 270 law schools have participated in ICODR since its inception in 2000.

 

ACLI is a collaborative project of several Caribbean and American law schools (http://www.fcsl.edu/acli/).  The participating Caribbean institutions are Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica, Eugene Dupuch Law School in The Bahamas, Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago, and The Cayman Islands School of Law in Grand Cayman. In the United States, the participating law schools are Florida Coastal University School of Law in Jacksonville, Florida, Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Stetson University College of Law, St. Petersburg, Florida, and Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall Law School in Houston, Texas.
