The 2012 Schwartz Lecture on Dispute Resolution will be given by Deborah M. Kolb, an internationally renowned expert on gender issues in negotiation and leadership. On April 4th at noon in the Moritz College of Law’s Saxbe Auditorium, she will speak on “Negotiating in the Shadow of Organizations: Doing Well by Doing Good.”
Recent research on gender and negotiation has moved away from simple comparisons of differences between men and women to more nuanced studies of the contexts in which gender issues become salient. Negotiation over salaries dominates this research with the consequence that gender stereotypes are primed to the detriment of women negotiators. In her talk, Dr. Kolb will expand this view to consider the organizational contexts within which a broader set of issues are negotiated to consider the positive contributions of women negotiators. Her research shows a new perspective where women negotiators actually do well for themselves at the same time as they do well for their organizations.
Dr. Kolb is the Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor for Women and Leadership (Emerita) and Distinguished Research Fellow at the Center for Gender in Organizations at the Simmons School of Management. From 1991-1994, Kolb was Executive Director of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School. She is currently a Senior Fellow at the Program where she co-directs The Negotiations in the Workplace Project. During the 2011-12 academic year, Kolb is a Distinguished Visiting Professor for Women and Leadership at Lokey School of Business at Mills College.
Dr. Kolb has co-authored several books on how women can negotiate the conditions for their own success while contributing to the effectiveness of their organization. Everyday Negotiation: Navigating the Hidden Agendas of Bargaining shows women (and men) how they can become more effective in their everyday negotiations by attending to the dual requirements of the shadow negotiation — advocacy for oneself and connection with others. Originally titled, The Shadow Negotiation, Harvard Business Review named it one of the ten best business books of 2000 and it received the best book award from the International Association of Conflict Management in 2001. Dr. Kolb’s new book, Her Place at the Table: A Woman’s Guide to Negotiating the Five Challenges of Leadership Success, describes how successful women negotiate for what they need to be effective in leadership roles at all levels of an organization.
Dr. Kolb publishes extensively on these topics and regularly presents her work to national and international audiences. Kolb has done work with many Fortune 500 companies as well as several national non-profit organizations. She is a principal in Negotiating Women, LLC., a company that provides negotiation training and consultation especially designed for women. Kolb was awarded the 2008 Outstanding Achievement Award for her contributions to women’s leadership issues by the Equality Commission of the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Boston Bar Association, and the Massachusetts Women’s Bar Association.
Dr. Kolb received her Ph.D. from MIT’s Sloan School of Management, where her dissertation won the Zannetos Prize for outstanding doctoral scholarship. She has a B.A. from Vassar College and an M.B.A. from the University of Colorado.
The Schwartz Lecture on Dispute Resolution was established in 1992 as a result of the generosity of the late Stanley Schwartz Jr. (a 1947 Moritz College of Law graduate) and the Schwartz family. Each lecture is published in the interdisciplinary Ohio State Journal on Dispute Resolution, in keeping with Mr. Schwartz’s interest in the promotion of scholarly publication in the area of dispute resolution.
