Pink Taxi Power

Following up to yesterday’s post on gender in different countries around the world, a student sent me a great article about how women in Mexico are dealing with the problem of their gendered context in which male cab drivers generally leer at and make comments about the women in their taxi.  In the city of Puebla, there are now 35 pink taxis that are driven by women for women.  It not only provides a nice haven for the passengers–make-up kit and alarm button included–it now also provides a new job for the drivers.  Much like the women-only train cars or buses in some cities, these taxis are catching on around the world.
