Over at the Forbes blog, Kwame Christian at the American Negotiation Institute asks this question in a recent post before listing 115 such books, some classics are on the list (Women Don’t Ask: Negotiation and the Gender Divide for example) as well as some fairly recent books (Ask for More: 10 Questions to Negotiate Anything – which I believe to be the best negotiation book to come out in some time). This is a good question. Why don’t negotiation books by women get more recognition? Could it be that it doesn’t fit the narrative that women don’t or shouldn’t negotiate? Or are there just too many negotiation books out there? Whatever the reason, it’s nonsense to think that women can’t negotiate or don’t have advice to give (as our very own Andrea Schneider points out here). The list is informative for a number of reasons, and some of these are sure to populate my summer reading list.
Coming up with this list and publishing it on a high-profile blog is laudatory. I can’t help but wonder about at least one questionable oversight — how did none of Carrie Menkel-Meadow’s books make the list?

Hello Art. Good question. Perhaps women tend to focus more on substantive areas that wrap negotiation into it? I wrote a book a few years ago that provides negotiation tips and strategies, but it is geared toward co-parenting for separated parents. Self-Centered Co-Parenting: Managing The Uncooperative Co-Parent, Kathleen Bird, sells on Amazon.
Art, I noticed Kwame (an OSU Law alum!) post the following on Linkedin a few weeks ago:
“Can you help us to make a list of all of the women who have authored books on negotiation?
“We want to highlight them in an article for Forbes in honor of Women’s History Month.”
It appears Carrie is listed in the Linkedin commments. Not sure why she does not appear on the Forbes list!
